Stag Moat
Prague 1 HlavnĂ mÄsto Praha Prague
đ§ English Audio Narration
JelenĂ pĹĂkop (Stag Moat), hidden in a deep natural ravine alongside Prague Castle, offers a unique and peaceful escape from the cityâs crowded tourist paths. Once used for breeding game for the royal courtâhence the nameâthe moat is now a beautifully restored green space that stretches along the northern fortifications of Prague Castle.
The upper part of the moat near the Brusnice stream is shaded and lush, while the lower section opens into wider meadows and wooded paths. In recent years, the area underwent extensive revitalisation including the construction of a striking modern pedestrian tunnel that now connects both parts of the moat under the PraĹĄnĂ˝ most (Powder Bridge). This clever design makes the entire length accessible, allowing for a peaceful walk from the castle gardens to MalostranskĂĄ Metro station, near Wallenstein Garden.
The Stag Moat is a perfect place for a quiet stroll, offering scenic views of the castle walls, seasonal flowers, and the occasional sculpture or installation. Itâs especially pleasant in spring and early autumn, when crowds are thinner and nature is at its most vibrant.
đĄ Top Tip đĄ
Start your walk at the PraĹĄnĂ˝ most entrance just below Prague Castle, and follow the path downhill through the revitalised moat. You'll exit near ValdĹĄtejnskĂĄ Street, close to MalostranskĂĄ Metro station and Wallenstein Garden. Entry is free, and itâs a great way to descend from the castle to MalĂĄ Strana while avoiding other busy tourist routes like Neruda Street or the Castle Stairs.
