Kostel sv. Mikuláše (St. Nicholas Church), rising above the rooftops of Lesser Town Square with its imposing green dome, is one of Prague’s greatest Baroque masterpieces. With its sweeping green dome and towering belfry, it dominates the skyline and stands among the most beautiful churches in Europe. Construction began in 1704 and spanned nearly a century, involving three generations of the famed Dientzenhofer family, with Kilian Ignaz Dientzenhofer completing much of the final design.

The interior is a dazzling display of Baroque art and architecture. Highlights include the monumental dome fresco by Johann Kracker, depicting the Apotheosis of St. Nicholas, and a grand pulpit adorned with gilded angel sculptures. The ornate interior is richly decorated with intricate frescoes, stucco work, and statues. The magnificent Baroque organ, with over 4,000 pipes, was once played by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. Today, the church remains not only an active place of worship but also a celebrated venue for classical concerts, continuing its long-standing cultural legacy.

💡 Top Tip 💡

For a panoramic view of Prague, consider visiting the adjacent bell tower of St. Nicholas Church (with a separate entrance), which once served as a surveillance point for the communist-era secret police due to its strategic vantage point near several embassies. Today, it offers one of the finest panoramic views in Lesser Town and is a quieter alternative to the more crowded Prague Castle viewpoints.
