Staronová synagoga (The Old-New Synagogue), also Altneuschul, is one of Prague's most iconic landmarks, serving as both the oldest active synagogue in Europe and a key symbol of the city’s Jewish heritage. Located in the heart of the Jewish Quarter, this Gothic structure was built in the 13th century and remains in continuous use to this day—an enduring emblem of Jewish tradition and resilience in Prague.
Its name, “Old-New,” reflects its dual nature: it is an ancient structure that has undergone various renovations over the centuries, blending elements of the old with the new. The interior is strikingly simple yet deeply atmospheric, with vaulted ceilings, slender columns, and intricate stained-glass windows casting soft light throughout the space. Notable features include the original medieval furnishings, a central bimah (raised platform), and a Torah ark dating back hundreds of years.
According to legend, the attic of the Old-New Synagogue hides the remains of the Golem—an artificial being crafted from clay by Rabbi Judah Loew to defend the Jewish community in times of danger. Though no one has entered the attic for centuries, the story continues to captivate the imagination of visitors and locals alike.
The Old-New Synagogue is more than just a place of worship; it remains an important spiritual and cultural center for Prague’s Jewish community. Daily prayers and special services are still held here, and the crypt below houses the tombs of prominent Jewish figures.
As a key stop on any visit to Josefov, the Old-New Synagogue offers a unique blend of living history, legend, and spiritual depth, making it one of the most meaningful and memorable experiences in the city.
💡 Top Tip 💡
Look closely at the symbols carved into the stonework—each one tells a story. And don’t miss the opportunity to learn about the Golem legend while standing where it supposedly unfolded.
