Mostecká Street (Bridge Street), is a vibrant blend of medieval charm and Baroque elegance, lined with colorful facades and bustling with life. This historic street connects the iconic Charles Bridge to Maltese Square.

Along Mostecká, you’ll encounter remarkable architectural landmarks, including the Kaiserstein Palace, a splendid early 17th-century Baroque residence named after its noble founder. Its richly decorated facade reflects the grandeur of Prague’s aristocratic past. Just off Mostecká, Lázeňská Street links to Maltese Square and is home to the elegant Velkopřevorský Palace, blending Renaissance and Baroque styles with a serene arcaded courtyard that offers a peaceful retreat from the city bustle.

On Lázeňská Street stands the Church of Panny Marie pod Řetězem (Church of Our Lady beneath the Chain), a striking Gothic church founded in the 13th century. It once formed part of Prague’s medieval river defenses, named after the iron chains that blocked the Vltava to protect the city from invaders. Today, the church is closely associated with the Knights of Malta and serves as their ceremonial chapel in Prague, which gives the square its name, Maltese Square.

Maltese Square itself is an oasis in this busy part of Prague, known for being home to several embassies and surrounded by elegant buildings. This quiet square provides a welcome contrast to the lively streets nearby, with cozy cafés and restaurants where visitors can soak up the atmosphere of historic Lesser Town.

💡 Top Tip 💡

Take time to explore the peaceful courtyard of the Renaissance house U Hradeb (no. 273) on Mostecká, once hosting a cinema, where the beautiful Rusalka fountain—inspired by Slavic water nymph folklore—adds a tranquil charm and a touch of local legend.
