Národní divadlo (National Theatre), standing proudly on the banks of the Vltava River, is a stunning symbol of Czech national identity and artistic ambition. Completed in 1881 thanks to a remarkable nationwide fundraising effort, this Neo-Renaissance masterpiece was tragically gutted by fire just months after opening. Undeterred, Czechs rallied once more to rebuild it—faster and grander—making the theatre not just a performance venue, but a monument to national resilience.

Its richly decorated façade, crowned with golden rooftop sculptures, reflects the pride of a people asserting their cultural independence during the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Inside, the opulent auditorium—with its gilded balconies and monumental curtain—is among the most breathtaking in Europe.

Just next door, the NovĂĄ scĂ©na (New Stage) offers a striking architectural contrast. Built in the 1980s in a bold Brutalist style with its distinctive glass façade, the New Stage houses the Laterna magika, a multimedia theatre known for pioneering experimental productions blending film, dance, and performance. Together, the National Theatre and New Stage represent the rich spectrum of Czech performing arts—from timeless classical works to cutting-edge contemporary expression.

Located on the National Theatre piazza (in between the New Stage of the National Theatre and the main building), you'll find VĂĄclav Havel Square, a small but significant space dedicated to the former Czech president and playwright. The square is enlivened by a sculpture in the form of a 160 cm large granite red heart, on which people can write messages, serving as a memorial to Havel. This intimate piazzetta serves as a quiet spot for reflection, often hosting cultural events and performances that honor Havel's legacy of freedom and human rights.

The National Theatre is also home to a rich program of opera, ballet, and drama, performed by the top ensembles of the National Theatre group, which also includes the Estates Theatre and the State Opera. If you’re short on time and can’t catch a performance, you can always take a guided tour of both theatres, where you'll get a behind-the-scenes look at the history, architecture, and artistic significance of the building. Tours are available in English, and offer a glimpse into the theatre’s production areas and backstage. It’s a fascinating way to explore the building's incredible restoration and learn about its rich cultural legacy.

For those planning to attend a performance, it's important to dress smart-casual or elegant, as a night at the National Theatre is considered a special occasion in Prague. Wearing T-shirts, sneakers, or sportswear is deemed inappropriate and may be frowned upon. If you didn’t pack anything suitable, no worries—there are shops selling shirts and dress shoes just steps away on Wenceslas Square. Arrive early to soak in the beautifully restored interior, have a glass of bubbly and pick up an English program for the show.

💡 Top Tip 💡

For a truly memorable experience, head up to the National Theatre's rooftop terrace for a drink before or during the performance. The stunning terrace offers panoramic views of the Vltava River, Prague Castle, and the city’s skyline—especially magical at sunset. Open even in winter, it’s the perfect spot to enjoy a warm drink and take in one of the best views in the city. The incredible statues that adorn the terrace are hard to miss, adding an extra touch of grandeur to this breathtaking spot.
