Nový Svět Hradčany Praha 1

See route

Nový Svět (New World), tucked away just below Loreta and Martinic Palace, a short stroll from Prague Castle, is one of Prague’s most charming and least touristy quarters. With its narrow cobblestone lanes, ivy-clad cottages, and peaceful atmosphere, it feels like stepping into a bygone century.

Originally a settlement for castle servants and artisans, the area dates back to the 14th century and retains a distinct village-like character. The modest houses, often painted in soft pastels and bearing romantic names like “At the Golden Grape,” were once home to astronomers, writers, and painters. Among them was Jan Zrzavý, a well-known Czech painter and illustrator.

Today, Nový Svět remains one of Prague’s best-kept secrets—a quiet enclave where locals come for peaceful walks and visitors stumble upon a different side of the city. The area also houses a small but beloved café and offers wonderful photo opportunities around every corner.

💡 Top Tip 💡

Treat yourself to a relaxing break at Snack Café U Raka (Černínská Street no. 10), a charming café tucked against the historic Marian Walls from 1730. In winter, enjoy the cozy interior with an open fireplace and scents of wood, whisky, and homemade treats—including a beloved apple strudel baked by the owner’s wife. In summer, sip Czech wine in the serene garden and take in the charm of this artist-run café, a favorite spot for locals and even a tradition for gathering after Christmas Eve.
