Kostel sv. Mikuláše (St. Nicholas Church), rising above the cobblestones of Old Town Square, is a striking example of Czech Baroque architecture, renowned for its grand façade and opulent interior. Designed by architect Kilián Ignaz Dientzenhofer and completed in 1735, it was built to rival its namesake across the Vltava River in Lesser Town.

Inside, the church dazzles with a dramatic ceiling fresco depicting the Triumph of St. Nicholas, intricate stucco work, and gilded details that reflect the extravagance of the 18th century. At the end of the 19th century, a chandelier adorned with crystal glass ornaments was donated by the Russian Tsar, adding to the church’s already lavish décor.

Recently restored, the organ—decorated with statues of angels and gilded carvings—remains a highlight for music lovers. Regular classical concerts make full use of the church’s renowned acoustics, creating an unforgettable listening experience.

Today, the church is still active and serves both liturgical and cultural purposes. It belongs to the Czechoslovak Hussite Church, a denomination rooted in the teachings of reformer Jan Hus, whose memorial stands just a few meters away on the square. Whether you visit for a quiet moment, a stirring concert, or architectural admiration, this Baroque jewel offers a peaceful escape amid Prague’s lively historic center.

💡 Top Tip 💡

Prague has two stunning Baroque churches named St. Nicholas—one here on Old Town Square, the other on Lesser Town Square. The Old Town church is elegant and intimate, perfect for smaller concerts and quiet reflection, while the Malá Strana church is grander, with a massive dome and dramatic interior where Mozart once played. Discover the contrasts and similarities for yourself—it’s a rewarding journey!
