Pinkasova synagoga (Pinkas Synagogue), founded in 1535 by the Horowitz family, holds a particularly solemn place among Prague’s Jewish landmarks. What was once a private family synagogue has become a memorial to the nearly 80,000 Jewish victims of the Holocaust from Bohemia and Moravia. After WWII, the synagogue was transformed into a powerful place of remembrance: the names of victims are hand-painted on the interior walls, room after room, organized by community and family and accompanied by their birth and death details. Walking through the revenant space is a deeply moving experience with lasting emotional imprint.

In addition to the memorial walls, the synagogue also features a poignant exhibition of drawings by Jewish children from the Terezín concentration camp, offering a heartbreaking glimpse into young lives disrupted and destroyed by the Holocaust. The drawings—ranging from hopeful depictions of home to haunting images of deportation—speak louder than words. The Pinkas Synagogue is not only a spiritual space but a critical educational one that bears witness to a dark chapter in Czech history. Allow yourself time to linger in silence—it’s more than a visit, it’s a reflection. Bring tissues; the children’s drawings are deeply moving and often leave visitors in tears.

💡 Top Tip 💡

As you walk through the synagogue, take a moment to pause and reflect on the names inscribed on the walls. The names are read out on a loop, and hearing them can help you connect with the individuals they represent. Many visitors discover the names of their own ancestors, which can be an incredibly moving experience.
