Obecní dům (Municipal House) is located next to the Powder Tower and is one of Prague’s most stunning buildings—a jewel of Art Nouveau architecture. Completed in 1912, it stands on the site of the former Royal Court Palace and has hosted many significant events, including the 1918 proclamation of Czechoslovakia’s independence.
The building is richly decorated inside and out, with intricate mosaics, stained glass, and sculptures by leading Czech artists of the time. Its centerpiece is Smetana Hall, a grand concert venue beneath a magnificent glass dome, home to classical performances and the annual Prague Spring music festival. However, the Municipal House is more than just Smetana Hall. It is home to several other beautiful halls, each hosting a range of cultural events. While Smetana Hall is the most famous and largest venue, renowned for its acoustics, smaller spaces like Sladkovský Hall and Grégr Hall offer more intimate settings for chamber music and other performances, making the Municipal House a vibrant hub for the arts.
Look up at the building’s façade that features a spectacular mosaic titled Homage to Prague, and the sculptural groupings around it reflect Czech national themes. It's one of the finest examples of Art Nouveau symbolism in the city and easy to miss if you're rushing past.
Visitors can explore the lavish interiors through a guided tour or attend a concert for a full cultural experience. There is also an elegant café, a restaurant serving modern Czech cuisine, and an underground beer hall on site, offering a chance to soak in the atmosphere even without a ticket.
💡 Top Tip 💡
For a memorable evening, book a concert at Smetana Hall—the blend of live classical music and the grand setting beneath its glass dome creates a magical atmosphere that many travelers consider a highlight of their Prague visit. Even if you don’t join a guided tour or attend a concert, step into the ground floor café or the stunning restaurant, just to admire the interiors. Both are open to the public and offer a glimpse into the building’s opulent Art Nouveau design without needing a ticket.
