Nestled between the Vltava River and the narrow Čertovka canal (Devil’s Stream), Kampa Island is a peaceful enclave in the heart of Prague’s Lesser Town. Known for its historical charm, this serene riverside area offers a striking contrast to the bustle of nearby Charles Bridge, with centuries-old houses, quiet gardens, and elegant Baroque architecture.

Historically used by millers and washerwomen, Kampa has long been a cultural and residential pocket of the city. You'll find beautiful historic homes such as At the Golden Lion and At the Golden Scissors, as well as the Werich Villa, once home to Czech cultural icon Jan Werich and now a museum and cultural venue with a lovely café. Nearby stands the majestic Tyršův dům, a 19th-century neo-Renaissance palace, Sokol's central headquarters, named after its founder. Sokol is a Czech physical education movement founded in 1862 promoting physical fitness, moral integrity, and national consciousness through gymnastics and athletics. It played a key role in Czech identity during foreign and communist rules.

Across Werich Villa, on the river side, is the stunning Lichtenstein Palace (also known as the Kaiserštejnský or Odkolkovský Palace), a luxurious guest residence for the Czech government, hosting distinguished visitors such as Queen Elizabeth II, the Spanish royal couple, and other world leaders. Managed by the Office of the Government, the palace is not open to the public, but its elegant presence adds to the historic charm of Kampa Island.

Just beside the island is the iconic Lennon Wall, and on the island itself, the Museum Kampa—a contemporary art gallery housed in a former mill—and a collection of whimsical public art installations, including the famous crawling baby sculptures by David Černý, a favorite among photographers. Stroll along the canal to spot the Velkopřevorský Mill, the last preserved old Renaissance mill from the 16th century, featuring a large wooden wheel.

Kampa is also a favorite local spot for riverside picnics, strolls beneath leafy trees, and relaxed afternoons with postcard-worthy views of Prague Castle. Enjoy the peaceful parklands or watch the swans along the riverbank.

💡 Top Tip 💡

Don’t miss David Černý’s sculpture of Věra Čáslavská, the multiple Olympic gold medalist and national hero, located in the courtyard of Tyršův dům—a powerful tribute hidden in plain sight. Originally created for the Paris 2024 Olympics and unveiled in front of the Czech House, it now has a permanent home in this historic location.
