Masarykovo nábřeží (Masaryk Embankment), a picturesque stretch along the Vltava River from Café Slavia to the Dancing House, offers one of the most rewarding walks in Prague, presenting a stunning panorama of the city’s architectural richness—from Baroque spires and Neo-Renaissance palaces to striking modernist landmarks.

Starting at Legií Bridge, take in postcard-perfect views of Prague Castle reflected in the river. Just nearby, Café Slavia, an iconic corner café, offers stunning vistas of both the Castle and the National Theatre. Long regarded as a cultural salon, this historic venue has been an important hub for intellectual and political discourse. Throughout the 20th century, it attracted writers, dissidents, and artists during pivotal moments in Czech history. Among its most notable regulars were Václav Havel, the dissident playwright who later became president, Bohumil Hrabal, one of the most beloved Czech novelists, and Milan Kundera, internationally renowned author. Today, Café Slavia remains the perfect riverside stop for coffee or a light lunch.

The National Theatre soon dominates the vista—a stunning example of Neo-Renaissance architecture and a proud symbol of Czech national identity. Opened in 1881 and rebuilt after a fire just two months later, it stands as a testament to the will of the people who funded its reconstruction entirely through public donations.

Crossing into Masaryk Embankment, the ambiance subtly shifts—more serene and lined with a harmonious row of late 19th and early 20th century buildings in styles ranging from Art Nouveau to early Modernism. Across a small pedestrian bridge, Slovanský Island (Slovanský ostrov) comes into view, home to the elegant Žofín Palace. This Neo-Renaissance gem is surrounded by a peaceful riverside park and hosts concerts, balls, and exhibitions. Locals come here to stroll, relax by the river, or enjoy summer festivals in a green oasis right in the city center.

Opposite Žofín you will notice the Goethe-Institut, a striking Neo-Renaissance villa that catches the eye of anyone strolling along the riverbank. As the German cultural institute in Prague, it regularly hosts art exhibitions, film screenings, and literary events open to the public.

Back on the mainland, you’ll soon reach the striking white form of the Mánes Exhibition Hall, a masterpiece of Czech functionalism. Once a hub for avant-garde artists, it continues to host contemporary exhibitions and art events. Don’t miss its terrace café for a light bite and riverside calm.

Your walk culminates at one of Prague’s most controversial yet celebrated structures: the Dancing House. Rising boldly above the river, this modern architectural icon was completed in 1996. With its curved glass façade and dynamic shape, it earned the nickname Fred & Ginger, recalling the famous dancers Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers. As the first major modern building constructed after the Velvet Revolution, it initially shocked locals for breaking with the historic skyline—but it’s now embraced as a symbol of the city’s rebirth and creativity. The rooftop terrace offers panoramic views of the river, Prague Castle, and beyond—an ideal ending to your riverside journey.

💡 Top Tip 💡

Just next to the Dancing House, look for the elegant Art Nouveau apartment buildings at Rašínovo nábřeží 2000/78 and 1980/70, built in 1905 by Václav Havel, the grandfather of President Václav Havel. The Havel family lived here for generations, and Václav Havel himself was born and spent much of his life in no. 78. Don’t miss the commemorative plaque on the building, inscribed with his words: “Zde jsem také žil” (“I also lived here”).
