KrĂĄlovskĂĄ zahrada (Royal Garden), originally established in 1534 by Ferdinand I of Habsburg on the site of medieval vineyards, stands as one of the most peaceful green retreats in the heart of Prague. From their Renaissance beginnings, the gardens were designed not only for beauty but also to entertain the royal court.
Over time, they were enhanced with notable architectural gems such as the Ball Game Hall (MĂÄovna), built in the 16th century, which was used for courtly ball games and features vaulted ceilings and ornate Renaissance details.
The stunning Queen Anneâs Summer Palace (KrĂĄlovskĂœ letohrĂĄdek krĂĄlovny Anny), also known as the Belvedere Pavilion, was built around 1560 as a summer residence for the royal family. It is an exquisite Renaissance structure featuring beautiful arcades and frescoed walls. The Belvedereâs airy design and artistic details make it a perfect spot to imagine the luxurious leisure of royal life.
Alongside the Belvedere, visitors can explore the New Orangery (NovĂĄ OranĆŸerie), built during the presidency of VĂĄclav Havel. This modern addition stands on the site of the original orangery and fig house, where exotic plants from around the world were once nurtured, reflecting Emperor Rudolf IIâs fascination with the natural sciences. The gardensâ quiet paths lead to charming nooks and statues that evoke the grandeur of Pragueâs golden age.
Throughout the year, the Royal Garden hosts special cultural events and open-air concerts, providing an enchanting backdrop for visitors to enjoy art and music amid natureâs splendor. Whether youâre seeking a quiet stroll, a moment of reflection, or a glimpse into royal leisure, the Royal Gardens and Belvedere offer a timeless experience that captures Pragueâs rich heritage.
The garden is accessible during the summer season through four entrances: two western gates from U PraĆĄnĂ©ho mostu Street, a northern gate near Queen Anneâs Summer Palace, and an eastern gate from Chotkovy sady Park.
