🎧 English Audio Narration
Petřínské sady (Petřín Gardens) sprawling across the wooded slopes of Petřín Hill in Lesser Town, are among the largest and most beloved green spaces in Prague. With winding paths, landscaped orchards, and sweeping panoramic views of the city, this tranquil hillside retreat offers a striking contrast to the city's historic core just below.
Originally a vineyard in the Middle Ages, the hillside was transformed in the 19th century into a series of romantic landscaped gardens. It’s now home to several iconic attractions, including the Petřín Lookout Tower, built in 1891 for the Jubilee Exhibition, as a Czech tribute to the Eiffel Tower. Though only 63 meters tall, its hilltop position gives it an elevation comparable to the real Eiffel Tower and offers breathtaking views over Prague’s red rooftops, the Vltava River, and Prague Castle.
Other highlights include the playful Mirror Maze, the Baroque Church of St. Lawrence, the Štefánik Observatory(offering an introduction to astronomy, with telescopes and exhibits), and the remains of the Hunger Wall, a 14th-century fortification commissioned by Emperor Charles IV.
Located at the bottom of Petřínské sady, near Újezd Street, the Memorial to the Victims of Communism features a series of bronze figures descending a staircase, each figure increasingly deteriorated, symbolizing the physical and psychological toll of political oppression.
You can enter the gardens from the bottom, near the Church of Our Lady Victorious and the Infant Jesus of Prague, and walk up the tree-lined paths. Alternatively, take the historic funicular railway (standard public transport ticket required) from Újezd Street, with a scenic midway stop at Nebozízek, where you’ll find a popular viewpoint and restaurant. For a more leisurely downhill experience, begin at the top entrance near Strahov Monastery, close to Prague Castle, and stroll down through the gardens for postcard-perfect views of the Old Town rooftops and the Vltava River.
In spring, cherry trees fill the park with blossoms, while autumn brings vibrant golden foliage—both ideal times for a picnic or a relaxed afternoon among locals.
💡 Top Tip 💡
Start your visit at Strahov Monastery, where you can admire the stunning Baroque library and sweeping views over Prague. Then descend through the tranquil Petřín Gardens, enjoying the blend of culture, history, and nature—and treat yourself to a scoop of Angelato ice cream at the bottom near Újezd as a perfect finale.
