Chrám Matky Boží před Týnem (Church of Our Lady before Týn), dominating the Old Town skyline with its distinctive Gothic twin spires, has been a spiritual anchor of Prague since the 14th century. Rising behind the pastel facades of the square, the church is both a symbol of religious devotion and a testament to the city's complex past.
Originally built on the site of a Romanesque church, it became the main sanctuary of the Hussite movement in the 15th century—a religious and political reform movement inspired by the teachings of Jan Hus, who was burned at the stake in 1415 for calling out corruption in the Catholic Church. After his death, his followers transformed the church into a stronghold of Czech reformist identity during a time of major upheaval in Bohemia.
Inside, the dramatic vaulted ceilings, Baroque altars, and the ornate tomb of Tycho Brahe, Danish astronomer at the court of Emperor Rudolf II, reflect its layered history. The impressive high altar adds a touch of Baroque grandeur to the otherwise Gothic interior.
Despite its towering presence, the entrance is modest—tucked between neighboring buildings—but the richly decorated interior offers a quiet, reflective contrast to the bustling square outside.
💡 Top Tip 💡
Don’t miss the tomb of Tycho Brahe, the Danish astronomer and court scientist to Emperor Rudolf II, who is buried inside the church. Once you're in the nave, look for his grave marker near the altar on the right-hand side—a fascinating piece of history often overlooked by casual visitors.
