The House at the Black Madonna

Dům u Černé Matky Boží (House of the Black Madonna) is a striking example of Cubist architecture, designed by Josef Gočár in 1912. It was the first Cubist building in Prague, and one of the very few in the world built entirely in this avant-garde style. Originally constructed as a department store, it now houses the Museum of Czech Cubism, showcasing furniture, art, and objects that reflect the sharp angles and bold geometry of the movement.

The building takes its name from a Baroque statue of the Black Madonna that adorns its corner—a remnant of the previous building that once stood here. Today, it's a must-visit for lovers of design and modern architecture, offering a unique insight into a short but significant artistic period in Czech history.

On the first floor, you’ll find the Grand Café Orient, the only Cubist café in the world. Restored to its original 1910s design, it invites visitors to step back in time while enjoying coffee and traditional Czech pastries in a stylish setting that feels like a living exhibit of the movement itself. On the ground floor, you’ll find the Black Madonna Café, with outdoor seating, serving light meals and delicious desserts and pastries—perfect for a relaxing break in a unique setting.

Don’t miss the original Cubist staircase inside—its elegant spiral is one of the building’s most photographed features. For the best view, look up from the ground floor or down from the museum level.
