Castle Stairs
Zámecké schody Malá Strana Praha 1
Zámecké schody (Castle Stairs) are two of the most atmospheric ways to approach Prague Castle: the Old Castle Stairs (Staré zámecké schody) and the New Castle Stairs (Nové zámecké schody), each offering not only a practical ascent to Prague Castle but also a scenic journey through the city’s rich layers of history.
The Old Castle Stairs (121 steps), built in the 19th century, begin at Klarov, near the Malostranská Metro stop, opposite the Kunsthalle Museum, and climb up to the back castle entrance at the Black Tower gate near the Toy Museum. This charming cobbled staircase passes through the beautiful Saint Wenceslas Vineyards, with a few quaint wine cafés—perfect for a quick pause. Lined with historic lamp posts, the stairs wind past hidden nooks and quiet corners rarely seen by those arriving via the main gate. At the top, before entering the castle grounds, don’t miss the Na Opyši lookout, an amazing spot offering breathtaking views over Lesser Town (Malá Strana) and the Vltava River—a truly memorable welcome to the castle precinct.
The New Castle Stairs (220 steps), ironically older than the Old Castle Stairs and dating back to the 14th century, start at Thunovská Street, rising from Valdštejnská Street—home to the Czech Senate—and lead up to the main Prague Castle entrance on Hradčany Square. From the top, enjoy spectacular views over the red rooftops of Lesser Town and the historic Neruda Street, lined with historic lamp posts, charming houses, and shops.
💡 Top Tip 💡
Don’t miss the unique Starbucks café tucked into the castle wall—one of the most atmospheric spots in Prague to enjoy your favorite coffee. Descend through a narrow medieval tower to find a beautifully designed space that thoughtfully respects its historic surroundings. From here, you can sip your drink while taking in spectacular views over the red rooftops of Malá Strana.
